She started in 2007 working on both commercial and personal projects. Marlies’ illustrations are the result of a painstaking collage process in which she weaves drawings, textures and random objects together. That’s just half the deal, as her creations are brought to life in a technique that she calls ‘digital cut-out animation’ enabling her to create humour with beautiful, detailed images animated with minimal but natural movement.
Coot
Due to the construction of a bridge, a ferry is out of service, and a skipper is left without passengers. A coot goes out to collect things for its nest and forms the binding factor.
A coot and a ferry skipper live harmoniously side by side in and on a city river. When a new bridge is built across the river, from one day to the next the skipper has lost all his passengers. Luckily, the bird, usually busy gathering material for his nest, turns out to be just the connecting factor that gives the ferry reason to sail again.
